Global data community to accelerate SDG progress

The 16th meeting of the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) will be held from 5 to 7 November 2025 in Kitakyushu, Japan.

The annual IAEG-SDG meeting serves as a key forum for the global data community to exchange knowledge, share country experiences, and address technical and methodological issues related to SDG monitoring. It provides an opportunity to review progress, discuss new and emerging data challenges, and strengthen collaboration among national statistical systems, international organizations and stakeholders.

The meeting is organized by UN DESA’s Statistics Division and hosted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan. The first day of the meeting will be a Members’ meeting, followed by two days of plenary sessions that will also be attended by non-member countries, regional and international agencies, and other stakeholders engaged in SDG data and monitoring.

This year’s meeting will feature an expanded programme with several parallel sessions, allowing participants to engage in more in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including AI and emerging data innovations for the SDGs, data disaggregation and inclusive data, a data communication lab, and lessons learned from national SDG implementation in Asia and the Pacific. A special focus session on climate and environmental indicators will also be included.

Discussions will further consider the remaining five years of SDG monitoring, the implications for data systems and financing, and lessons learned that can help guide efforts for the post-2030 development agenda.
