Youth and Indigenous Women headline August events

Image

As part of its advocacy work on social inclusion and development of youth and indigenous peoples, UN DESA’s Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) is organizing two events this coming August:

Shining a spotlight on Inspiring Indigenous Women

Indigenous women are the backbone of indigenous peoples’ communities and play a crucial role in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge. They are the caretakers of our natural resources and keepers of scientific knowledge.

In commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August, the Division for Inclusive Social Development would like invite you to celebrate “Inspiring Indigenous Women! Past or present”.

In a one-minute video, tell us who your Inspiring Indigenous Woman is and why she inspires you. Is she an activist? A human rights defender? An entrepreneur? An artist? A family member?

Share your video on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and tag @UN4Indigenous and use the hashtag #InspiringIndigenousWomen. The most creative and inspiring videos will be showcased during the commemorations on 9 August at 9–11am EST. So, get creative and shine a spotlight! For more information, please visit this website.

Engaging youth: Moving from ageism to intergenerational solidarity

Through its resolution 54/120 adopted in 1999, the General Assembly declared 12 August as International Youth Day. This year’s theme — Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages — seeks to raise awareness of ageism, particularly against youth, and to highlight the importance of intergenerational approaches in ensuring all voices are recognized and meaningfully engaged in advancing the 2030 Agenda.

As we “build back better” from the COVID-19 pandemic, combatting ageism and fostering collaboration across generations is key to a sustainable and inclusive recovery, ensuring no one is left behind.

UN DESA, in cooperation with the Major Group on Children and Youth (MGCY), will officially commemorate the 2022 International Youth Day with a virtual global webinar featuring a presentation on the Global Report on Ageism.  The webinar will explore the topics of intergenerational solidarity, intergenerational equity, future generations, and ageism. It will also showcase various examples of intergenerational initiatives to achieve the SDGs.

To watch the webinar on 12 August, and for more information about International Youth Day, please visit this website and join the discussion by using #YouthDay on @UNDESA@UNDESASocial and @UN4Youth on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter.
