UN ECOSOC: The way forward
The 2025 session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will be critical in operationalizing the Pact for the Future and building on the 2023 SDG Summit.
As we approach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 deadline, their promise faces unprecedented challenges. Development progress is reversing due to the convergence of climate disasters, conflicts, and economic downturns. Urgent and decisive action is needed to overcome these setbacks and get back on track toward achieving the SDGs.
The Economic and Social Council, through its various segments, forums and meetings, as well as the work of its functional commissions and expert bodies, has a critical role in advancing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It will contribute to key intergovernmental processes in 2025, including the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, the Second World Summit for Social Development and the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Furthermore, in 2025 the Council will focus on deepening its engagement with international financial institutions, harnessing artificial intelligence for SDGs and addressing the crisis of displacement. It will ensure that gender equality and inclusivity serve as crosscutting themes, as outlined by the current President of ECOSOC, H.E. Mr. Bob Rae (Canada).
ECOSOC will continue to stand as the beacon of inclusive multilateralism to advance common solutions for sustainable development, bringing global leaders, the UN system, and civil society in its annual forums, meetings, and conferences to advance solutions for sustainable development.
