Capacity Development

 

The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) is part of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides advisory services to Governments, at their request, and regional organizations aimed at developing capacities in areas within the purview of the sub programme, at the national and regional levels, with special emphasis on the needs of the least developed countries, Africa and small island developing States.

Activities comprise the formulation, execution, monitoring and evaluation of specific technical projects. Assistance is also provided to Governments in devising multidisciplinary operational strategies that promote equitable social and economic development. The Division organizes training workshops and seminars and conducts applied research and field studies, disseminated in both hard copy and electronic formats.

The Division’s approach to capacity development strengthens social groups’ capacity to achieve well-being through greater inclusion and more active participation in society.

The Division provides an interface between global policies and national action, and between research and policy formulation, thereby translating international agreements into strategies at the country level and feeding experiences gained from the country level to the intergovernmental policy development process through internationally-agreed plans and programmes of action, including:

Latest Capacity Development Projects

A webinar on the UNDESA/ILO project “Achieving SDGs and ending poverty through Universal Social Protection” was held on March 18, 2021. Research findings on the governance of social protection systems globally and in selected countries (Argentina, China, Fiji, Kenya, Mauritius) were shared with stakeholders in the project countries of Cambodia and Pakistan in order to provide better technical information for policymaking.

Representatives of DESA/DISD and the ILO spoke during the opening about the project and the importance of research, data collection and exchange. After that researchers provided background and details on the global study and the five country case studies and presented their overall findings. That was followed by a Q+A from participants from the two project countries and colleagues from ILO and DESA.

UN DESA/ILO PROJECT on achieving SDGs and ending poverty through universal social protection
The main objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the government in Cambodia and Pakistan to formulate, implement, monitor and evaluate national social security schemes, and contribute to the global knowledge base to promote experience‐sharing and learning. The project will make good use of all the efforts supported through previous and ongoing technical cooperation to improve the governance of social protection in these two countries. There is a growing need for awareness‐raising at the global level, as well as for the sharing of knowledge and the development of practical guidance for the governance of social security systems. Thus, this project will have an important role in bridging the gap in developing a comprehensive overview of the best practices, tools and communication mechanisms for the good governance in the social protection systems. The project will be jointly implemented by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) and the International Labour Office (ILO) Social Protection Department (SOCPRO) in the framework of ILO’s Global Flagship Programme on Building Social Protection Floors for All.

 

UN DESA  PROJECT on Multiple Indicator Survey on Ageing (MISA) in Africa
The project was conceived to be “the starting point of a larger DESA initiative that aims to assist countries in collecting and analyzing data on older persons in order to more accurately monitor the changing situation of older persons during the implementation phase of the 2030 Development Agenda. Its core objective is “to develop a standard methodology to produce, analyze and deliver a database of harmonized indicators on the situation of older persons in Africa.”
